She graduated in acting from the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (1967), but since her first engagement at the Prague Music Theatre, she has focused on directing. Shes was working in onother venues have included the National Theatre in Prague, the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen, the State Theatre in Ostrava, the Central Puppet Theatre in Prague, the Prague City Theatres, and many guest theatres around the country.

In 1970, she was on a three-month internship at the Royal Shakespeare Company in London, where she met, among others, Peter Brook, who subsequently invited her to be a foreign observer for the rehearsals of a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. She described her experience in her essay Peter Brook and his A Midsummer Night's Dream. She is also the author of more nearly five hundred scholarly articles. She has performed forty roles, directed or assistant-directed two hundred productions, and has written forty plays. She is also a long-time radio director.
