Dolanská Slávka

activities Interview
Actress; Reviewer; Lecturer; Publicist (* 1927/6/19 Plzeň)

As the daughter of a violinist with the opera at Pilsen’s J. K. Tyl Theatre, Slávka Dolanská attended the theatre regularly from childhood. Immediately after the war, she joined the Pilsen Theatre Studio, and later the May 5th Theatre Studio in Prague. After passing her acting exams, she accepted an engagement in Český Těšín (1949), and shortly after moved to the Horácký Theatre in Jihlava where she was a lecturer in dramaturgy (1951–52). She returned to Prague, where she worked as a theatre editor at the Osvěta Publishing House (which merged with Orbis soon after that), as well as for the magazine Ochotnické Divadlo (Amateur Theatre). In the early 1960s, she moved to Czechoslovak Radio to the Zrcadlo Kultury (Culture Mirror) programme, where she focused on theatre criticism and the creation of original programmes with a theatrical theme.

Although her given name was Věnceslava, she was known as Slávka; her husband was the theatrologist Adolf Scherl (1925-2017).

Oral history of the Czech theatre

This project was launched in 2015 and seeks to capture the memories of important figures in the field of Czech theatre in audio recordings (usually around four hours long) and, in most cases, also in a short video recording (10–20 minutes long). The recordings are followed by a report of the conversation, which offers a summary of discussed topics and personalities, after every 15-20 minutes. Photographs and personal documents (both in digital format), provided by the narrator, are also available.

The Oral History Module provides a list of figures who have recorded their memories, along with a brief profile, current photograph, and the interview protocol. Full recording, including all the additional materials, is supposed to be studied by registered researchers in the Information and Documentation Department of ATI only. Feel free to contact Lucie Čepcová: lucie.cepcova(at) if you are interested.
