From childhood, he played amateur theatre, for example in the Young Pioneers Theatre (Divadlo mladých pionýrů), the Smíchov People's Stage (Lidová scéna Smíchov), the Synthetic Theatre in Vinohrady (Syntetické divadlo na Vinohradech), and the Vavřín Society (SpolekVavřín). After graduating from grammar school, he studied drama at the Prague Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (1953-1957) under Otomar Krejča and Bohuš Záhorský. During his studies, he became a member of the ensemble of the Realistic Theatre Z. Nejedlý, where he worked for 33 years. At the same time, he devoted himself to teaching at the Prague Conservatoire. After leaving his engagement he was a guest at various venues: in Prague at the Theatre Na Fidlovačce, the Drama Club, and the Prague City Theatres, Musical Theatre Karlín, Háta Theatre Company, as well as the Mladá Boleslav Municipal Theatre. For a long time, he has been involved in dubbing and concert melodrama.

In 2003, he was awarded the Senior Prix prize by the Život umělce Foundation for lifetime artistic work.
