Belgium
In spite of financial difficulties which are encountered everywhere we are again participating in the Prague Quadrennial. In 1983 the French and Flemish communities had separate expositions. This time we have attempted to prepare a joint national exposition. The items we exhibit strive to provide an overall view of Belgian scenography. They include the work of both well-known stage designers and those artists who are only beginning their career. A large number of young stage designers now works in small theatrical groups which were founded in the sixtiesthroughout the country, as a counterpoint to the large permanent theatres.

While for the French part of the country stage designers are educated at the prestigious de la Cambre State Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Serge Creuz for the Flemish part of the country this type of education was available only much later. We are happy to report that now a stage and costume design curriculum is offered at Saint Lucas in Brussels and also at the Academies in Ghent and Antwerp.

Brazílie

In a country with an area of nearly nine million km2, with a population of over 130 million inhabitants, we do not have any school that specializes in forming stage designers or theatre technical workers. Most stage designers come from courses like architecture or art and through experimenting and attempting end up specializing in the area. From the nearly 200 theatre halls existing in the country, 90 % of which in Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, less than 10 % of them provide the basic requirements for major scenographic projects.

In Brazil we have very few fixed companies: only two or three groups have been able to keep together for two or three consecutive productions. To the exceptions belong The Stable Company of Repertoire (Companhia Estável de Repertório) with six productions and The Centre of Theatrical Research (Centro de Pesquisas Teatrais) with four productions. Most of the times when the production manages to keep the same group, it does not manage to keep the same stage director.

Perhaps because of all the problems and hindrances, the Brazilian stage designers have developed a certain versatility and creativity. What we are presenting at this Prague Quadrennial is the work of stage designers that belong to the same theatre company. The group is still in the establishing phases and, therefore, still unable to define its own characteristic line of work.

Our exposition at the Prague Quadrennial 1987 differs significantly from our presentation in past years. The concept of our exhibit, the work of mostly young scenographers, is an expression of our motto: „The artisťs imagination seeks its implementation". The exposition is composed of ten individual sections, each of which presents one stage production The artists have attempted to show the visitor the path they themselves have taken to the theatre, in the context of various creative problems working conditions existing in various theatres, the produced drama itself and the process of mutual interaction with stage direction procedures They present not only designs, visual ideas, but also their implementation and the documentation concerning the production itself. They have attempted to capture not only the artistic, but also the organizational and technical aspects of theatrical operations. Their point of departure is the concept that a scenographer in a theatre exists only through his or her stage designs; they present their work as "small stage designs", integrated into "the large stage design" of the whole exposition.

They strive to come as close as possible to the visitor, rid him of passivity and challenge his participation in the creative process. And finally with the help of audiovisual media they want to inform the visitor of the aim of each stage design, of art in action — the essence of the theatre.

Československo

Since the last Prague Quadrennial, Czechoslovak stage design has entered a new period of creativity, which can be briefly described as a marked transition from so-called action scenography, which strived for the full interconnection between the visual aspect and individual elements of the action and function of the staging, towards a scenography of image theatre. Its marked characteristic is the pressing need to communicate and hence also to stress the socially current aspects of contemporary drama. Development trends now have a tendency to clearly formulate the image significance of space. The total meaning import of tangible space is created by stressing the metaphorical quality of the visual element as a variable and dynamic inspirator and co-player of the actor, in the time dimension. This trend of our further development is based on the work of a number of personalities, who cannot be defined as members of a specific generation, but rather by their creative approach, which makes them indispensible members of creative staging teams. It is these creative teams which at present determine the quality and future of Czechoslovak theatrical art. The rich and highly variable stratification of Czechoslovak stage design has its basic common development-determining characteristics. These include above all the comprehensive link between visual aspects on the one side and the action and the idea of the performance on the other, as well as the dynamic quality of the transformations to which they lead. In other words the mutual interconnection in time between the visual component, the idea behind the specific staging and their multi-faceted theatrical communication with the significance of the dramatic persona on the one hand and the spectator on the other.

The common ground of these new trends in Czechoslovak stage designs is a flowering of the imagination, which supports the development of the content and idea of the staging. This development of course continues in the extensive tradition of Czechoslovak stage design and underlines their most characteristic traits — their poetic and lyrical qualities.

According to recent statistics, there are 317 kinds of traditional classic operas in China. Although they greatly differ in their music and even the language they use in the fields of the stage structure, props, stage costume and make-up they are basically the same; none of them use any scenery.

For this exhibition we have selected some stage costumes, masks patterns of the make-up from the well known Peking opera and other traditional operas. This stage art was created by unknown folk artists in embroidery and by players during the past hundred years.

Modern Chinese stage art first appeared in 1907, but it was Europeanized and Japanized. From then until 1949, spoken drama and Europeanized opera were extremely different from the traditional opera. But the great development of the modern stage art has occurred only since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The Chinese Government invested large sums of money to build and rebuild theatres, and now all theatrical groups have professional stage designers of their own. In order to train more able people, stage art departments were set up at the universities of Peking and Shanghai. With more and more international cultural exchange and various theatrical performances taking place, since 1976 stage art has become more varied. But before 1975, the form used was basically only realistic.

By looking at our exhibits, you can see how the style of our various performances has changed. We are only beginning to adopt varied and different methods and styles, from the realistic to the abstract.

New theatre concepts are rapidly developing from visual arts, dance and space theatre.

You could divide stage designs into two categories, those illustrating the manuscript and those that use it as a basis for visual abstraction. Illustrating the manuscript seems to work best with older plays, while abstraction is most successful with modern plays. Classical writers, however, evokes an equal amount of interest at conventional as well as alternative Danish stages.

In Finland the theatre is a traditionally very beloved art and in recent years an interest in it has continued to grow.

Under these circumstances the professions of scenic designers and costume designers have become more valued and there is an increased interest in them. Among the problems our scenographers face is periphery location of our country, which makes it difficult to maintain foreign contacts and exert an influence.

On the other hand we have in Finland a strong tradition of design, which also influences stage and costume art.

Among our most difficult problems and at the same time the source of the greatest demand for our scenographs during these last few years are the new theatre buildings and their often too big stages, which are not always built according to the wishes of theatre performers. The development of theatrical lighting is one of the most important aspects of a scenographer´s work hand in Finland greater stress on this area is now only beginning. However, the Theatre Academy has forge ahead and since the autumn 1986 a four year course for the education of

light and sound designers are offered there.

The Theatre Academy also has a department for completing theatre education, which offers numerous annual short term courses both for set and costume designers and for technical personnel. For example in the spring of 1986 ten highly experienced costume designers took part in teaching ten week courses.

Francie
On the basic of his experience of forty years, Jean-Louis Barrault has decided to build a theatre where the stage and the seating area share a common space which reminds us of an arena — the stage is not separated from the audience by a proscenium arch. He has asked the stage designers from the Rond-Point Theatre to create ever new scenographie approaches which will utilize this highly original space, as well as the nature of the play to be staged. Also a second, small, angular

auditorium provides opportunities for stage design experiments, above all by Simone Benmussa and Jean-Pierre Granval.

The mutual interaction of space stage design creativity in the productions of the Renaud-Barrault Company have also led to particularly interesting lighting. Yannis Kokkos, who undoubtedly is the most outstanding personality of French stage design in recent years, has developed experiences of this type at the Palace Chaillot, in collaboration with Antoine Vitez its director. It was also he, who within the framework of a variable theatrical space has defined the seating area and its decorations as a component of the stage designs, which should be an extension, in harmony with the staging concept. In order to provide a more complete view of his designs we have included some of his other work into our exposition, which he produced for various stages throughout Europe.

Island
This is the first time Iceland is represented at the Prague Quadrennial. A definitive history of Icelandic theatre only goes back some two or three hundred years, and unlike the rich tradition of storytelling, evidence for performances before the early part of the 18t h century is scant. Students at the Cathedral school in the south of the country, at Skálholt, began performing an annual ritual in the 18t h century. The students used a raised platform without scenery and the performance consisted for

the most part of a satirical speech. This, however, led to the advent of Icelandic drama, as by 1790 the festivities included the performance of a short satirical play or comedy. Iceland was a Danish colony at the time and eventually the authorities found these activities offensive and banned them. The ban was finally lifted in 1820 and when the school moved to Reykjavík in 1846, the students' annual performances began reaching a wider audience. Reykjavík was only a small town at the time, but amateur dramatic societies were soon established and plays were

regularly performed in both Danish and Icelandic.

During the latter half of the 19th century, the theatre became the most popular form of entertainment, a status it still retains. The chief exponent of the theatre at the time was the painter Sigurdur Gudmundsson, who single-handedly revolutionized Icelandic theatre. Realizing its potential against foreign oppression, and this eventually led him to express the need for a national stage from which the people could be enlightened and made aware of their national identity. Gudmundsson became the first stage designer and can also be considered the first director, since he frequently used to arrange the actors to create a tableaux. His settings usually depicted an Icelandic landscape through the use of a painted backdrop and flats, while interiors were made from painted flats. Gudmundsson was also the first to use make-up on his actors as a means for artistic expression. Gudmundsson was a romantic, both as an artist and visionary, and his ideal was that Iceland will have a national drama created from folklore. He thus prompted poets to write plays from folklore, suggesting that the craft be learned by translating great works, such as the plays of Shakespeare and Moliere.

In spite of Gudmundssoďs untimely death in 1874, his influence was evident well into this century, in playwriting as well as in scenery. When the Reykjavík Theatre Company was established in 1897, the aim was to secure the growth of Icelandic drama and to raise the standard of productions. True to Gudmundssoďs ideals, the company presented a large number of new Icelandic plays, mostly neoromantic in vein, until 1920, with scenery in Gudmundssoďs style. Until 1950 the company managed to gradually raise standards, recruiting the first professional actors, who arrived on the scene from training abroad during the twenties and thirties.

The existence of the Reykjavík Theatre Company was threatened in 1950 with the opening of the new National Theatre, since nearly all the actors were recruited for the new theatre. A handful of idealists decided to preserve and carry on in competition with the National Theatre. The National Theatre was the realization of Gudmundssoďs dreams, his disciples having fought for it for almost half a century. Gudmundssoďs influence was evident in the romanticism and nationalism of the first productions, but this was probably out of respect for his example and not part of the struggle for independence, because Iceland had already become a republic in 1944.

It was not until the 1960s and 1970s that experimentation with new styles in scenery began. Those decades saw a renaissance in dramatic writing and new Icelandic plays became the norm rather than the exception. A number of young designers worked in impressionism, realism, expressionism and even close to surrealism. All in all, the last 25 years have proved fruitful in Icelandic theatre and scenic artists have met the challenge with high quality and fine skill, and their solutions have been arrived at through adventurous experimentation with colour, materials

and form.

The Japan Stage and TV Designers Association, JASTA, was founded in 1958 for the purpose of promoting artistic improvement, encouraging members' mutual aid, and establishing members' social status. As the nationwide organization for stage and TV artists in Japan, we now have 380 members. Throughout the year, we perform a variety of activities with great emphasis upon exhibitions. Since the last Prague Quadrennial 1983, we have held the following: the 1984 Tokyo International Stage Arts Exhibition, the 1985 Contemporary British Stage Arts Exhibition, the 1985 l'st overseas JASTA Exhibition in Peking and Shanghai, the 1985 10th JASTA Biennale, and the 1986 l l t h JASTA Biennale. The experience we had in China was significant, and we hope to continue to associate

with foreign artists through exhibitions for mutual understanding. At this Prague Quadrennial 1987, Japan will participate in the three sections: the National, Theme and Architecture section. The 26 participants for the National section were chosen from the entire membership of JASTA including TV artists. These artists energetically express contemporary Japanese theatre space.

Chekhov, who was chosen for the Prague Quadrennial 1987 theme, is familiar in Japan. In the history of performing foreign plays in the Japanese language in Japan, the modern Japanese theatre has developed along with the history of performing Chekhov. In theme section Part 1, we introduce the history of Chekhov performances in the past; in Part 2, we introduce the performance variety of Chekhov in current theatres: each includes productions by ten artists.

In the Architecture section, we introduce the five productions which include the first and subsequent prizes at the 1986 Architectural Competition for the new National Theatre in Tokyo. With this exhibition, we hope we can consistently introduce contemporary theatre art activities in Japan.

Maďarsko
In the seventies the renewal of Hungarian scenography took up a more dynamic sweep and thus in the eighties one could already consider the further development of what may be called indeed an important period. At the same time about the middle of the decade we can also take note of some signs pointing to a new phase.

The structure, the theatrical set-up widened, newly founded theatres at Zalaegerszeg and Nyiregyháza became artistic workshops in their own right. The József Katona Theatre, wedged in the structure of the capital city, turned into a highly distinguished ensemble, with a specific and important scenographical outlook. New theatrical forms were born or perfected, e. g. scenes without a company of their own — as the Géza Gárdonyi Theatre founded in 1984 in the town Eger — or small theatres run on an independent cooperative basis; and the forerunner of the

former type, the Playhouse in Budapest, took its place among the most interesting houses of the country.

Theatrical activity became more open, its economical and legal conditions more informal; at the same time, owing to certain economical difficulties, increasing value was attached to economical efficiency which, of course, affected scenography, too.

While several economical and technical conditions deteriorated, still, as a result of the reconstruction of some theatre buildings and with the generous backing of the state, the architectural and technical basis of theatre activity and thus of scenography too could register important progress. Although adoption of the most advanced materials and manufacturing processes in scenography and in the turning out of sets and costumes is sometimes slow, there are however some promising experiments (laser theatre, performance theatre etc).

To sum it all up we may say that in the course of recent years we could witness a further progress of the former modern and strongly expressive tendencies in scenography which brought forth many results of outstanding

value.

Fortunately one could also witness members of the new generations soaring into excellence, the majority being fresh graduates of the Scenographical Department at the Academy of Fine Arts who operate mostly in the regions, enriching workshops or contributing to the founding of new ones.

Today's Hungarian scenography, equally active in the field of drama, musical and dance theatre, is in a period of permanent change and advance, boasting of a number of new achievements but also confronted with many problems and struggles

This contribution likes to present the public of these Theatre Design International Exhibition productions that represent significantly the work of stage designers of our country during the last four theatre seasons. We would like to show again how their work at the final product performance goes closely and indissolubly together with the work of directors actors, dramaturges and musicians. They are traditionally not interested in an effective stage design for the scenic events, but with their measures as artists in conveying the message, the production offers

their audience.

In the process a remarkably grown self-consciousness of the stage and costume designers is appearing recently, it is reflected in very original often unusual sceneries, that use as well visual discordances, optical breaks collages from various space and time levels, ambivalent symbols, and that relate not any more only integrally to the other forms of expressions of the production, to the text, the directing, the expressions by gesture and the music, but more polyphonically, strive for dialogues. In this way they use methods and procedures that have an increasingly

formative influence on other art genres, too. Expression of a social and aesthetic appreciation of problems that got more subtile, in the form sphere of getting doubtful of the dividing lines between the genres. The exposition presents the stage design not only as a local determination but as art of disquiet.

The work exhibited comes from theatres recognised as community orientated organisations. Only the community drama theatres have their own permanent auditoriums; the opera and ballet have no home theatre, but perform in commercial houses. New Zealand is a young country celebrating 100 years of establishment in 1990. Its small communities generated home entertainment for most of its history and relied on imported professional theatre until 1950. Since then, indigenous development has been in small drama organisations serving their immediate

community, and of seven small drama theatres in the 1960's, four of them had built flexible staging auditoriums. Even smaller groups have now grown up, in spaces for no more than 100 spectators, and its here we see the hard work to explore New Zealand writing and cross fertilisation of contemporary art forms. The back bone of the Country's drama resides in five community theatres which receive approximately 25 % subsidy indirectly from the state to serve their community with the best offering from both foreign and home writing, it is only these theatres that can afford resident designers (and who, as the most proficient, are extended to service the ad hoc work of opera companies and various ballet groups). There is a big gap between the reliable professional designer and those starting. The profession rates no more than 15 throughout the whole country and now considerable efforts are being made nationally to train production workers and designers. The country's very isolation and lack of understanding of in-depth artistic support is both a retardation and development value. Theatres are free to experiment without traditional pressures, and expect and will get productions at one quarter of the cost foreign budgets. Expediency and resourcefulness are a way of life for the New Zealand designer.

Spectacles whose visual side were equally important as their literary ideas and became decide about the contents of performance. Their authors stage designers and directors sometime replaced entirely the dramatic contents of a play with their own narration based on visual sequences of various rhythms, mentions and series of conflicts. They begun creating their own scenarios-dramas of new type and transforming the function of the actors still conserving them as real creators of the theatre on stage.

Their theatre was different from its traditional form because it was created just by one person, being a screenwriter, stage designer and a director at the same time. Fundamental for all this theatrical event was stage design, taken to the limits of its potentiality and changed into the most important stuff. Most acknowledged are the productions of Tadeusz Kantor and Józef Szajna.

Polish exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial 1987 presented now is on the same way: in national section is shown Slowly Darkening Painfulness (Powolne ciemnienie malowidel) of Jerzy Grzegorzewski, originally produced in 1985 in Studio Theatre in Warsaw (costumer - B. Hanicka), and in a thematic section Chekhov's Ivanov interpreted in stage design by Leszek Madzik (performed in 1981 in J. Osterwďs Theatre in Lublin under direction of I. Gogolewski and with costumes of L. Jankowska). Grzegorzewski as well as Madzik, according to the words of Craig, can be named „The Artists of Theatre". They both are scenario writers, stage designers and directors at the same time The theatre made by Grzegorzewski is based on literature; however it is not presented directly. Literature decides of the frames of action but does not fill them. Visual side of Grzegorzewskis productions discloses the existence of things. The world of human ideas and values begins with a relation to things and corresponding experiences and feelings Slowly Darkening Paintures referring among others to the Malcolm Lowry s Under the Volcano, taking up the problems of human existence meaning of his actions and culture, discloses their beginning in the

visual sphere.

The main purpose of stage design, as an art which expresses the world by creating images of life's fragments, is at present fulfilled above all when scenographie approaches are defined by the specific status of stage design within the framework of the fine arts.

If we carefully study various stage design concepts, in the same way as other creative work by artists in other areas of the fine arts are studied, we can discover this basic approach in the most unexpected manner by which everything surrounding us is formed, whether it should be a street, a shop, a museum, an interior decoration or architecture outdoors. And it is precisely this specific and unique approach which we find in the work of some stage designers who by carrying out a synthesis, in fact create their own, new world. It is an approach which cannot be learnt, an approach which the artist is born with and which comes into its own at the moment of maturity, when the creator acquires his or her own artistic profile, his or her own „manuscript".

The work exhibited in our exposition has been subjected to these criteria; it is testimony to the above indicated approach to stage designs. We find a specific scenographical approach in the theatrical architecture and stage designs of Paul Bortnovski and Liviu Ciulei, we encounter it also in the stage designs of Vasile Rotaru and Ion Popescu-Udriste, as well as the costume designs by Doina Levinta, the buildings of Viorel Penisoará and Romulus Fenes, the scenography of Emilia Jivanov and Dan Jitianu.

If we attempt to newly define the meaning of specifically scenographie approaches, which we consider to be the indispensable prerequisite for the creation of dramatic action, then we come to the conclusion that the theatre of the future requires a new type of „stage director and designer", who creates the atmosphere of the production, who strives through dramatic structure towards an ideal and organic interpretation of the form and content of the production to achieve the natural expression of the whole creative team, based on the ideas of the play’s

text. It is the correctly interpreted structure of a dramatic work which accepts stage design elements as prerequisite, which creates the conditions for a valuable work of art. Thus in the future stage directors will strive for the implementation of an „universal stage structure", subordinated to the purposeful development of dramatic effect

The USA Exhibit takes as its theme the designers „Work in Progress," a concept which illustrates the creative processes from which a theatre piece develops. Our setting-an archetypal „designers studio" — is propped and dressed with our exhibit materials. Intermingling are works by nearly 100 major US costume and scenic designers in the performing arts and entertainment media: theatre, opera, dance, television and film.

Source material; white and painted models; sketches and drawings elevations; samples; workshop; shop, rehearsal, and production photos; costume, prop, and set pieces illuminate the creative process which is both common to designers of all nations, yet unique to each.

SSSR
The Soviet exposition of 1987 at Prague Quadrennial is somewhat different from those we showed at all the previous. Then we tried to present the scale and diversity of Soviet scenographie research, show the rich work of individual designers working in various cities and republics of the country. Now the exposition is wholly devoted to one subject called „Our Chekhov". There are only eight scenographers: Sergey Barkhin, David Borovsky, Alexander Vasiliev, Mart Kitayev, Edward Kochergin, Valery Levental, Daniil Leder and Vladimir Serebrovsky.

They are all distinguished masters of the Soviet theatre, and each has Chekhov productions to his credit. For them Chekhov is a living classic with whom a dialogue always reveals to the artist something very substantial and very important about life past and present, about the human soul, the times and about oneself. That being so, in choosing this structure for the exposition, we not only tried to meet the topic suggested by the Prague Quadrennial organizers (Chekhov productions) in the best possible way, but hoped that this time too, sketches and models

for Chekhov productions would give the spectator some idea about the fundamental principles underlying Soviet scenography and the wide diversity of plastic and scenic ideas, and their evolution in time, and the trends that have emerged in recent years.

How the same new trends reveal themselves in scenography based on another kind of drama, especially modern drama can be seen at another exposition of ours. It is on display at the House of Soviet Culture and Science, and we regard it as a second (inseparable from Chekhov's) part of the Soviet contribution to the Prague Quadrennial

1987.

The Swedish part of the exhibition consists of contributions made by several different artists, who have worked within varied kinds of theatre. Thereby, it reflects the manifoldness of current theatre life in Sweden. In our proportionately sparsely populated country more than one hundred professional theatres are in existence.

The include the national theatres, The Royal Opera and The Royal Dramatic Theatre, soon to be 200 years old, The Swedish National Theatre Centre, which tours around the entire country, a number of large city theatres, most of which were founded in the 1940s and 1950s and a number of regional theatres, born in the 1960s and 1970s in the

movement tor decentralization: now altogether 24 city and regional theatres.

There are also about forty state-supported free groups, some of which have permanent stages and some of which tour, and about the same number of not-supported groups.

The Swedish theatre, like most European theatre, is based on court theatre with its pronounced literary stress. The pictorial aspects of a theatre performance have been badly neglected equally by critics, scholars and the theatres' own performing artists.

During the past decades, however, stage design has grown in importance and the profession has become self-dependent. Since 1970 stage designers are educated at the Dramatic Institute. At present three students are admitted to a three-year training course every year. In Sweden today, there-are about 150 professional stage designers working.

The exhibition presents some examples of current Swedish stage design which we hope illustrates a growing awareness of the pictorial importance within various genres and styles of theatre: musical theatre drama dance and puppet theatre, classical works or works by modern authors, Swedish and international, on different types of stages- at the Royal Opera, The Royal Dramatic Theatre, The Swedish National Theatre Centre, regional theatres, theatre and dance groups.

When presenting his work on theatrical masks, Werner Strub cites a quotation from a book by Eduardo Sanguineti, Maschere e Choc, which is devoted to the work of Benno Besson, with whom Werner Straub collaborated, among others also on a production of Sophocles King Oedipus, adapted by the same Eduardo Sanguineti: „The theatre is a mask. It is reincarnation in the broadest sense of the word. The actor is created by this transformation, which occurs when playing a role; he seems to put aside his own every day identity, his own

civic status, to become someone else. Structurally, for him it means that, 1 am another'. By impersonating a character he creates and defines it on the stage and thus clearly articulates a previously accepted and agreed upon alienation. A mask, costume, make-up are signs, fraudulent but transparent, of replacing a person. When Besson chooses a mask it was because he likes to stress this system of clear falsification upon which the theatre is based with evident provocativeness and to remind us of the ritual origins of the word. This is our first paradox, in which

a presented reincarnation, which aims at creating a delusion, makes itself manifest and at the same time transforms characteristics of a magic ceremony into a cultural and playful convention. In a theatrical reincarnation we cannot separate the aspect of enchantment and the aspect of overt pretension. And this reincarnation is of course just as valid for an actor, for a time and a space. It also finds its way into the text. The here is also elsewhere, the now is also long ago. This character is exactly the same as that person. What he is saying is a direct quotation of his words."

Laos
The theatrical culture of Laos is for the remaining world an almost unknown offspring from the great theatrical tradition of the Orient. Nevertheless as early as the 14th century remarkable theatrical forms developed there, which are been preserved unchanged until the present and belong among the precious treasures of the world culture. From a number of Laotian principalities (rich with legends) arose in 1353 on the upper flow of Mekong first state formation with the capital in Luang Prabang. Its founder Fa-ngum spent his youth in exile at the royal court in Kampuchean Angkor. To his new empire he brought refined artists, builders, men of letters, musicians and theatre experts. In the traditions of Angkoťs culture primarily female dancers participated performing the goddess Apsara. She finally disappeared, but what retained and in an original way developed, was Laotian branch of music dance drama on the themes of Indian epic Ramayana or of legends about different Buddha's transformations so-called djatak.

A pentatonic melody produced by playing gongs, xylophones, drums and hobos, accompanies these classical productions with dance and mimic scenes, which are as a whole the unique form of a synthetic theatre, with a number of symbols and conventional signs applied mainly by masks, hand, eye and leg movements. In these productions performed always only women — also in men's roles. Presumably just in Laotian music dance drama is preserved the ancient tradition of Khmeťs theatre in the most untouched form. After the revolution in 1975 the cultural politics of the present-day People's Democratic Republic of Laos established favourable conditions to renewal of this national cultural treasure. From the courtial gardens of Luang Prabang the ballet activities have been transferred to the capital Vientiane, where they are — together with other classical and folk, but also with contemporary European music and dance forms — being studied and performed at the Academy of Arts and Dance. A new group of classical music and dance drama have been successfully constituted, which is being extended by new outstanding female dancers. Several dance groups have been founded specializing in folk dance of different Laotian nationalities, alike groups of classical and folk music. The latest speciality is European music, dance and ballet.

Theatre which is Inspired by Scenography. In the Netherlands there is a theatrical movement which plays theatrical performances in places which were not intended for this purpose. This does not mean that any place can hold a stage for a theatrical performance; but such places can be a source of inspiration for specific stagings. The architecture and atmosphere of a building or the nature of a landscape thus create basic elements for the mutual interplay of actors, sounds and light.

The Netherlands Theatrical Institute here presents three temples of such performances one choreographic element predominate, while the other two are movement plays. The Last Meadow (Het laaste weiland) is a play which is inspired by the environment of a slaughterhouse; as soon as the butchers who work there are done with their work, the Grifteater, as the group is called, takes over the available space, in order to undertake, together with the audience, a trip across a meadow, which leads to nowhere. The performance by the BEWTH group takes place in a former iron mill. BEWTH has been playing in various such places for the last ten years: in churches, factories, circuses, in warehouses or palaces. With the help of such elements as dance, pantomime, music and lighting, the group creates a new type of theatre, based on visual poetry.

Zénith is the name of a dance, which originally was danced in the sand dunes. The choreography requires a sand dune 25 meters wide and 80 meters high. The main elements of the performance are natural sets: sand, open space, a high and steep slope — they are made maximum use of during the performance.

Katalánie
Of the other cultures of Spain, has undergone a pronounced process of normalization which is the result of the new political situation and a sound immediate tradition whose main characteristic is creativity In this context, the consolidation of experiences from 1960 to 1975i has given rise to a new institutional theatre supported by public institutions and diversified private offerings which range over all fields of dramatic creation from repertoire to new visual forms or frontier genres such as theatre-dance. One of the most original and creative aspects of the Catalan theatre is stage design. With a historical background of a very rich stage design tradition, brilliantly developed from romanticism to the decade of the „isms", with their immediate background in the radical renovation of the last two decades, stage and costume designers have created a diverse plastic language. Among these professionals Fabiá Puigserver with his ripe style and professional virtuosity stands out He has become one of the specialists in greatest demand by the Catalan theatre and theatres in the rest of Spain and his work has begun to penetrate in Europe and America.

At the same time, because of the need to provide well-empted spaces for performing adequate to the volume of productions and the new audience of recent years, a quite important creative movement of theatrical architecture has started, which concerns both new buildings and the restoration and adaptation of old ones. One of the latest and most successful examples of restoration of old buildings is the Teatres de 1'Institute with its aim: to provide a stage for public performances those companies and genres (mime, puppets, experimental theatre) which encounter obstacles to performing in professional or public theatres.

Spain (Catalonia), through the Theatre Institute of the Country Council of Barcelona (Institut de Teátre de la Disputació de Barcelona) presents at the Prague Quadrennial 1987 some of the stage designs made by Fabiá Puigserver during the last five years: 17 productions with the stage and costumes designs made by him.
This is our first time in the Prague Quadrennial and we take part in it with the work of a very important stage designer. That is the reason why at the beginning of the exhibition we would like to furnish briefly some information concerning Puigserveťs previous works based on five important titles dating from 1963 to 1978.
Three different factors characterize Puigserveťs work: his accuracy in projecting and making the work; the large variety of formal and structural concepts and the unusual poetical power and dramatic insight of the spaces and costumes designed by him. He has influenced the contemporary Catalan theatre a lot and has opened new horizons for the Catalan stage design tradition.

Vietnam
The present-day Vietnamese theatre - besides the developing genres like pantomime, puppet theatre, show etc. - represents above all the KICH NOI Drama Theatre. It was founded in 1920 and directly influenced by French theatre (which in 1920 performed Moliere’s play in Hanoy). In the beginning its repertoire was based on the classical European drama, especially of French origin. After Vietnam gained independence the theatre's repertory was broadened by Soviet plays (above all those by Maxim Gorky). In recent years plays from other socialist countries have been staged, too (in 1985 first Slovak play Luigis Heart by Bukovcan was performed), at present the performance of Capek’s drama The White Scourge is being prepared. About fifty dramatic groups (including amateur ones) at present focus on revolutionary and propaganda themes. The Vietnamese theatre faces important cultural and political tasks: it is highly capable of reflecting urgent problems of the day with considerable political function.
